Invisalign on the Gold Coast

Invisalign uses a series of clear, removable aligners to move teeth gradually. They're much less noticeable than braces, though not invisible, and they only work while you wear them. We check whether aligners suit your teeth and bite before you decide.

Open Monday to Friday

What aligners can help with

  • Crowded teeth
  • Gaps between teeth
  • Teeth that have moved since earlier braces
  • Some bite problems, depending on how much the teeth need to move

More complex bite problems may suit braces better. Your dentist will tell you which.

How Invisalign treatment works

  1. Consultation

We check your teeth, gums and bite, talk about what you'd like to change, and whether aligners or braces would suit you better.

  2. Scan and plan

We take a digital scan or impressions of your teeth, which are used to plan each stage of the tooth movement.

  3. Wearing your aligners

You change to a new set every one to two weeks, and wear them all the time except when you eat, drink anything other than water, or clean your teeth.

  4. Check-ins

Regular visits let us see how your teeth are moving.

  5. Retainer

When treatment finishes, a retainer helps stop your teeth drifting back.

Clear aligners or braces?

  • Clear aligners

Removable, so you can brush, floss and eat normally. They only work while they're in, so you need to wear them nearly all day.

  • Braces

Fixed to your teeth, so there's nothing to remember. Metal or tooth-coloured ceramic. Can suit more complex tooth movement.

  • An orthodontist

For complex cases we can refer you to an orthodontist, who has completed a further three years of university training in straightening teeth and jaws.

Good to know

Sugary drinks and aligners don't mix

Juice or soft drink trapped under an aligner sits against your teeth. Take the aligners out, and brush or rinse before putting them back.

Cleaning your aligners

Clean them when you clean your teeth, using a spare toothbrush and antibacterial liquid soap, then rinse them well with warm water.

Why DIY aligners aren't recommended

The Australian Dental Association doesn't recommend aligners ordered without an in-person assessment, because they can permanently damage teeth, gums and jaw joints.

Retainers are part of treatment

Teeth can drift back after treatment. Wearing your retainer as advised is part of looking after your teeth once the aligners are finished.

Things to be aware of

  • Pressure or soreness for a day or two with each new set.
  • Small tooth-coloured bumps called attachments may be bonded to some teeth to help them move.
  • Decay or gum inflammation if teeth and aligners aren't kept clean.
  • Any orthodontic treatment can shorten tooth roots slightly. Your dentist monitors this.
  • Teeth moving back if the retainer isn't worn.

Questions about Invisalign

How long does Invisalign take?

It depends on how much your teeth need to move. Your dentist will give you an estimate after your consultation.

Does Invisalign hurt?

You may feel pressure or tightness for a day or two when you switch to a new set. This is normal.

Can I eat with my aligners in?

Take them out to eat or drink anything other than plain water, then brush or rinse before putting them back.

Are clear aligners invisible?

No. They're clear plastic, so they're much less noticeable than metal braces, but they can be seen up close.

Is Invisalign suitable for teenagers?

Clear aligners can be used for teenagers. Your dentist will assess whether they suit your teen's teeth, and whether they'll manage wearing removable trays every day.

Does health insurance cover Invisalign?

Orthodontic cover varies a lot between policies, and often has a lifetime limit and long waiting periods. Ask us for a written quote with item numbers to check with your fund.

Is there a charge for the Invisalign consultation?

No. Your first Invisalign consultation is at no charge. [Offer terms: what the consultation includes, and whether X-rays or scans are charged]
