Smiling boy in a dental chair having his teeth checked

Children's dentist on the Gold Coast

We see children from their first teeth through to their teenage years. Early visits are mostly about getting used to the chair, the light and the people, so your child is comfortable here before anything needs doing.

Open Monday to Friday

What happens as your child grows

  1. First teeth, or by their first birthday

The Australian Dental Association recommends a first visit when the first teeth appear. We look at your child's teeth and gums, often with them on your lap, and talk about brushing, bottles and dummies.

  2. Toddlers and preschoolers

Short, regular check-ups to spot early decay. We show your child each tool before we use it and count their teeth together.

  3. School age

Check-ups and cleans, and fissure sealants where they help: a thin coating that seals the grooves in back teeth, where decay often starts.

  4. Ages 7 to 10

A check of how the teeth and jaws are growing. The Australian Society of Orthodontists recommends an orthodontic check at this age.

  5. Teenagers

Custom sports mouthguards, advice on wisdom teeth as they develop, and straightening options if they're needed.

Good to know

Before the first visit

Talk about the dentist in a matter-of-fact way and avoid words like hurt or needle. Bring a favourite toy if it helps, and book a time when your child is usually rested.

Baby teeth matter

Baby teeth hold space for adult teeth and help with eating and speech. Decay in baby teeth can cause pain and infection, so it's worth treating.

Bottles at bedtime

Going to sleep with a bottle of milk or juice leaves sugar on the teeth for hours. If your child needs a drink in bed, make it water.

Mouthguards for sport

The Australian Dental Association recommends a custom-fitted mouthguard for sports where the face could be hit. We make them from a scan or impression of your child's teeth.

Children's visits are billed by item, like adult visits. Eligible children are bulk billed under the CDBS for covered services, so there's nothing to pay for those.

We accept all private health funds and claim on the spot with HICAPS.

Kids and the CDBS

We bulk bill eligible children under the Child Dental Benefits Schedule, so there's no out-of-pocket cost for covered services. Eligible children can receive up to $1,158 in benefits for basic dental services over two consecutive calendar years (2026 and 2027).

  • Your child is aged 0 to 17 for at least one day of the calendar year.
  • You or your child receive an eligible government payment, such as Family Tax Benefit Part A, at least once in the calendar year.
  • Your child is eligible for Medicare.

Eligibility is assessed each calendar year. If your child becomes eligible later in the year, it's backdated to 1 January.

What it covers

  • Check-ups and cleaning
  • X-rays
  • Fissure sealing
  • Fillings
  • Root canal treatment
  • Extractions

It doesn't cover orthodontic or cosmetic dental work, or dental care in a hospital. Some items have limits, so ask us before treatment starts.

Services Australia sends a letter if your child is eligible. You can also check in myGov (Medicare, then History and statements, then Child Dental Benefits Schedule), call Medicare on 132 011, or ask us and we'll check for you.

You can't claim the same service from the CDBS and your health fund.

Bring your child's Medicare card to each visit.

The cap is indexed each 1 January, and the amount depends on the year your child's two-year period starts. Unused benefits can't be carried past the two years.

Questions about children's dentistry

When should my child first see a dentist?

When their first teeth appear, or by their first birthday. Early visits get your child used to the clinic before any treatment is needed.

Do you bulk bill children?

Yes, for children eligible for the Child Dental Benefits Schedule. Covered services such as check-ups, cleans, X-rays, fissure sealants and fillings cost you nothing while your child has benefits left under the cap.

What if my child is scared?

Tell us when you book. We explain each step in words your child understands, show them the tools first, and stop if they need a break. A short visit that goes well makes the next one easier.

Are fissure sealants worth it?

Sealants protect the deep grooves in back teeth, where decay often starts. Your dentist may suggest them for teeth with deep grooves or for children at higher risk of decay. Placing them doesn't need an injection or drilling.

When should my child have an orthodontic check?

The Australian Society of Orthodontists recommends a check between 7 and 10 years of age. We look at how the teeth and jaws are growing at your child's regular visits and tell you if treatment or a referral would help.

What should I do if my child knocks out a tooth?

If it's a baby tooth, don't put it back in, as that can damage the adult tooth growing underneath. Rinse their mouth with water, use a cold pack for swelling and call us. If it's an adult tooth, put it back in if you can and call us straight away. Our emergency dentist page explains what to do.

Can you check if my child is eligible for the CDBS?

Yes. Ask us when you book and we'll check your child's eligibility and remaining balance with Services Australia before the visit.
